A superlative print marking the extraordinary bravery of the RAF in defending the vital strategic island and the stoic resistance and courage of its people – which inspired King George VI to award the island the George Medal – the highest civilian award available.
The print is from an original painting by John Young VPGAvA, VPASAA and shows a section of Spitfires from No. 249 Squadron climbing up over Valletta at the height of the Battle for Malta. 249 Squadron would end the war as the highest-scoring fighter squadron in the RAF.
The print is signed by the artist and 24 distinguished survivors of the siege. RAF personnel: Sqn. Ldr. A. Aldridge, Sqn. Ldr. C. Bamberger, AM Sir Ivor Broom, Gp. Capt. B. Drake, Flt. Lt. D. Sir John Roxburgh and Lt. Cdr. P. Twiss. Army personnel: Lt. S. Fraser and Sgt. F. Rixon. Maltese citizens: Lt. Col. Chevalier A. Bonello, Brig. G. Micallef, Dr. C. Tabone and Chief Nursing Officer C. Turner.
Issued in a limited edition of just 500, the print is supplied with a 4-page guide to the painting and the signatories together with a numbered Certificate of Authentication.
